Caramel Apples and more amazing Auburn Football

This past Saturday Paul and I went over to Ryan Moore's house to watch the Auburn/LSU game.  We WON 24-17 and are now ranked number #1 in country!!!! Ahh!! We attend/watch Auburn games every Saturday in hopes for this very thing to happen but now that it is here I must say #1 is a scary position.  I almost don't even want to talk about it in fear that it might slip away.  We still have 4 games left, including two of our biggest rivals UGA and Alabama, which only means the season isn't over.  BUT I am by noooo means an Auburn football fanatic so I can't really talk too long about it - if you want details you might want to contact Carson(orange and navy runs through his veins) or Paul (who knows more about Auburn football than I do now).

The fact that I am not an Auburn football fanatic leads me into the main subject of my post - Caramel Apples!  I brought all of the supplies to make caramel apples over to Ryan's so that I would have something to do during the game.  It was my first time making them so I learned a few lessons along the way...

Below is a my mini-version of a fall Auburn tailgate :)
 Auburn koozie of course!
You can really get creative with your toppings which makes them that much more fun to make and eat!

I used thick popsicle sticks that I found at Target in the craft section.
Ryan made amazing pulled pork, coleslaw and corn on the cob - delish!
Wax paper is a MUST - they are very messy!!!
Pat and Alison came over with their little dog Dakota.

The main lesson I learned during my first run at making homemade caramel apples:  the amount of water you put in the caramel while melting it is verryyyy important!  If you notice in the picture above, the caramel is still dripping - this is not supposed to happen.  I used too much water in my first batch of melted caramel which made the caramel runny and all of the toppings slid to the bottom.  During my second batch I completely forget to use water and the caramel was almost too hard.  I would suggest 1 tbsp of water for each bag of caramel squares - start with less and add more if needed on the next batch.
As you can see above - the candycorn apple in the front dripped to the bottom and the candy corn apple in the back stayed put.  Water is key!

Even though they were messy they were still good!  With all of the toppings at the bottom, the best way to eat them was to slice them up and they became little apple dippers.
After the game we went to a restaurant/bar down the street called Playwright.  They were having a Corona promotion contest - for every Corona you ordered you had a ticket entered into a grill winning contest.  Paul won!!  They were supposed to announce the winner at 9:15, at 9:17 Paul walked back to the girls and asked who won and she replied "You did!" We think she was just ready to get out of there and head to her own party and Paul walked back at the perfect time.  Either way - we have a new charcoal grill and a really cool grill set.  It will come in very handy with all of the cooking we are trying to do.

Overall it was another great Saturday up here in Beantown :)
War Eagle!!
